Home Base info?

Hey I've heard that in UFO: Aftermath base management will be streamlined and that there will be no currency or costs, but instead there will be scavenging and salvage. Well what I haven't figured out is what exactly does "streamlined" mean?? Will there still be labs and factories built? Will the base or bases be underground or on the surface? (I think I heard that it will be underground because of destructive spores or something)

Also what about base defence.....are we gonna get sentry turrets/auto cannons for the base while the game is underway or is it gonna be like X-com 1 & 2 where you only have defence used in order to blow up the invading force before they arrive and dock?

It would be cool if as a grey walks through a corridor an autogun pops out of the roof and pumps the Reticulan full of molten death :P

This would be logical for a military base instead of relying on soldiers just like a normal mission.

IMHO there should be a difference in fights from invading an alien base to defending your own. Clearly you should have the advantage if it is home base! :P

Well from what I gather, streamlined means that there will be NO building of base modules. When you recover a base from alien control, you can set it to either research, military or manufacture. That's it then, that's all it does.

If you look at some of the screenshots in the gallery, you'll see there's one of a worldscape view. The two buttons you'll be most familiar with are the two at the top-right of the screen. There, you pick what you want to research and manufacture, and depending on how many research and manufacturing bases you have, the projects will be completed in varying lengths of time.

So whilst you're not going to have any mroe control over your bases, I read somewhere that you will still have to defend them if the Aliens fight back, so I imagine some sort of layout has been thought of by Altar for the bases, and I wouldn't be at all surprisd if there were defenses of some kind inside them

What so your saying that you can only have a base if you take it over from alien control? Or can you build a base yourself?? Like you'd click on the map and when you have enough resources you can choose to make a "Research Base" or a "Manufacturing Base". I'd be kinda hard when you start off the game if you only have one base and overrunning alien bases is the only way for more... then you'd only be able to research or just manufacture at the start, pissing you off either way. (I researched this cool laser rifle and now I can't manufacture it!!)

Is that it? :hmmm:

Well I'm not toos ure how it all starts out, bt the aim of the game is to take back the planet from alien control, so I imagine for the most part you'll be fighting aliens for bases and research.

You may be able to build the odd bas here and there, but I'm not sure...

Maybe you start off with one of each type, or maybe there's a small amount of research and manufacturing done even if no bases are specialised in that area. Kind of like the way the Total Annihilation commander generated small amounts of metal and energy so you weren't completely stuck if you're base was destroyed.

From the world view screenshot I assume the yellow boxes are bases, as one is over Istanbul (if my geography is correct ??? ). I expect each base covers some territory, as depicted by the blue line round your territory. Problems with that theory -

There's no visible difference between the yellow boxes inside your territory and outside, though that could just be placeholder graphics.

The blue line in North Africa if much farther away from the bases than in Europe. Could just be that bases can cover difference size areas, depending on what's in them.

The yellow boxes may only be discovered bases since large portions of the map don't have any. The two bases in South Africa look like alien bio-mass bases since they're both in the centre of a biomass area, that's if the aliens have specialied bio-mass bases.

The yellow boxes may even be missions, if there's an anti-biomass mission type.

Sorry, went a bit off-topic there

I'm not entirely sure how it all works, myself, but here's what I know. Note that none of this is final, so it could all change, and Im' not sure about it anyway. So don't quote me.

As I understand it, the bases aren't all under alien control. Many of them will be, but not all. Some can be taken back without a direct base assault, but I believe that combat will most often be involved. Then the base can be assigned a type, which will have differing effects on the game. Like I said before, not a lot is final, so I can't tell you many specifics.

All sounds good Fulby. I tihnk there's going to be lot of different lines all over the worldscape, as I read a bit about air superiority somewhere, so they could mean anything at the moment :P

And thanks Evan! That cleared up a few things I was unsure about, but I understand anything could change in the next 6 months or so

Evan isn't really the team. He should be but he's not. Evan is THE TEAM. Not the team. The team is Pete and to a lesser extent me, and then the rest of you guys are somewhere below that...

Evan is their team, the Altar team. Congratulations Evan, wherever you are! You've been accepted!

errr thats what I meant... the ALTAR team. I've seen him post at the ALTAR forums as a ALTAR team member.

Thats not to say that I'm not thanking this team either cuz they rock (good stuff Pete!!) :P

P.S. Even if I didn't know him from the other forums I could tell from his Group name in his description as being "Altar Interactive"

It is really but I hadn't spotted that. I only changed mine yesterday but I'm too boring to vary it from the one I keep at XTC. It seems to be how everyone knows me.

So how often can we expect to hear from our interactive friend then? I have a question for him...
