I've had that in Apocalypse but not in UFO. The way to write in characters like this guy bloke is to have them be seemingly quite hard around the base but then as soon as they see an alien they go beserk (as they actually do on occasion! )
Welcome back to the wonderful world of Fan-fiction! (it's short for fantastic!)
Go check em out, UFO TFTD and Apocalypse all under one roof!!!

Also why not check out XCom : Colonisation over in the special projects forum. Won't kill you if you do, might kill you if you don't!

Exactly, which is why I don't think you can just say "Oh, this guy is a whimpering coward who panics in any form of combat situation and is very likely to get him and/or his team killed.  Let's hire him."
Wild magic and miracle working...
Chaos theory and wierd science...
Acts of gods and freak occurrences...
At the point where unbelievable coincidences and contrived events converge...
I reach my hand into the gaping hole that exists within the plot of the universe...
I send my prayer across barriers of logic, calling forth the forces of pure dumb luck to aid my quest...
Let the improbable happen...
I summon...
Deus Ex Machina!

Er, sorry, by the character I didn't mean that he'd come apart at first notice...more that
he'd always look like he's on the break of brinkdown, but never actually crossing the line.

Actually, snikers, I think that's basically what you said in the profile.  At least that was the way I took it the first time I read it.
Queen and huntress, chaste and fair,
Now the sun is laid to sleep,
Seated in thy silver chair,
State in wonted manner keep:
Hesperus entreats thy light,
Goddess excellently bright.

I presumed the same as Doc but I think the character should be ok if he's introduced properly. Whoever writes about the unloading of Doc's galaxy transport can say that he's on there.

Character's Name: Stan Genega

Character's Callsign: Knight

Character's Background: <<<CLASSIFIED>>>

Character's Personal Information: General Genega was at the top of a very short list of candidates for command of X-Com.  He is an extremely capable field soldier, and an even better commander.  His grasp of tactics and strategy is uncanny, and he has almost a sixth sense about what an enemy will do next.  He cares about his soldiers and makes it a point of personal pride to know every soldier and their background.  He will never ask a soldier to perform a task he is not both willing to, and capable of, doing.

Strength: Above Average

Speed: Above Average

Agility: Average

Stamina: High

Character's Mental Condition: <<<CLASSIFIED>>>

Psionic potential: <<<CLASSIFIED>>>

Bravery: Extremely High

Character's Controller: Warlord, but others may write for him as necessary.
"For the Angel of Death spread his wings on the blast,
And breathed in the face of the foe as he pass'd;
And the eyes of the sleepers wax'd deadly and chill,
And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!"

This doesn't sound like a "large but unimposing figure."  (See TJ's fanfic post.)

By large I only meant large. Nothing massively Warlord sized! Anyway whoever writes the next bit could quite easily say that 'his large frame seemed to hold less strength than it suggested' or something similar.

N.B. I'm writing the Commander's Big Briefing Speech at the moment. After the Galaxy unloads, 15-minute tour, and the hour sorting out quarters, the PA announces a general meeting in the Presentation Room (Theatre) on Sublevel 3. Time will be 3:00pm local time, OK? Anyone got a date? I think it's mid-December, early Summer?

Anyone who wants to write the Commander's interaction with DocFrance can sneak it in before then - I picture an explanation along the lines of, because it was a rush order to transport, they didn't fully consider the security aspects until it was too late and the plane was landing, so they have to induct the Doc by edict. Commander meets him in person once he learns the Doc's rep, to help things go smoothly, wants him on the team.
The deadly Lobsterman threat was finally countered by melee combat with power tools. -ufopaedia.org

Like, it's ready, dudes.

I'll post it tomorrow to give everyone a chance to tie up dangling intros and head for the briefing room. (Sneak previews available. I'm quite proud.)

Also some plasma fodder:

ShuWei Chen, of Hong Kong Police Tactical Unit, Special Duties Unit
Short, not slim, short hair dyed red, serious about her work to catch criminals, sensitive to male discriminiation, likely to die in first deployment of X-COM when it all goes pear-shaped.

I was hoping someone else would write the Commander's interaction with Trigger Doc and Cheese. I don't really want to write too much of their introduction, especially as they aren't mine!

Character's Name: Christopher Black
Character's Callsign: VAMPIRE
Character's Background:

Born in a small town in the North of England, he grew up on the street. His father was unknown to his mother, apart from his creation and she died hours after his birth. He was cared for in an orphanage. The other children did not like him, as he knew things that they had not dared tell others about. There were no secrets from Chris. He did well at school, not needing to study, he just answered the questions correctly, as if he was choosing the best answers came naturally. He also has a natural ability to acquire new languages. Chris. was given a scholarship to Oxford where he was interested in the ways nature worked. He studied Bio-Technology and went on to do research into the many ways new compounds could be used. This work was noticed by the large Pharmaceutical companies who were falling over each other  to get him signed up.

Character's Personal Information:

About average height, well muscled - but not overly so. He does Yoga every day. His dark hair which is shoulder length is tied up at the back. His eyes are very pale blue, his mouth is wide with good dental work. This has often reminded others of the singer "Sting". He also has Celtic designs tattooed across the top of his shoulders, back and upper arms. He was drafted in to Pine Gap from a project in Malaysia and is wearing a tight fitting suit of finest slate grey silk, dark leather sandals and a pair of Police shades.

Strength: Average
Speed: Above average
Agility: Above Average
Character's Mental Condition: Can suffer depression and paranoia
Psionic potential: Very Good
Bravery: Average
Character's Controller (will you write for them?) Anybody that needs to including Doug. When he gets a chance !

So - what do you think ? :)   :)  :dontgetit:  :)
Cheers

Doug.

Mr. Black sounds like a fine character - and we welcome him to the biotech team. A strange nickname, but oddly suiting for one working with blood samples and DNA.  :o

I'd like to add a cryptozoologist, who was known to the government for his analysis of the "alien autopsy" hoax video.  May have been privy to the Roswell crash. Can't think of a character other than a bearded guy, so if this sets the creative wheels going for someone, write him up. I just like the job description "cryptozoologist". :)

**********
And here's the pilot who appeared in the fic:

Name: Gia O'Connor
Callsign: RAVEN
Background:

Irish and French parents, American upbringing, USAF test pilot, previous base was Groom Lake, assigned to X-COM after her "test" flight of the Hurricane Interceptor prototype was successful in catching up to a UFO. Now assigned to X-COM's Hurricane Interceptor squadron.

Personal Information:
Black hair, as long as can be comfortably scrunched into a flight helmet. A bit of a fashion victim when not in uniform and tends to date her way through the other available male pilots. Open, talkative, with a warm smile. High energy.

Physical Statistics:
Strength: Average
Speed: Good. Pilot's reflexes.
Agility: Good

Mental Condition
Psionic potential: Not required
Bravery: Good. She lives for the adrenaline rush and feels it enhances her performance.

Controller: Jellyfish Green sometimes, others definitely welcome. May in fact go down in flames, but it will take a battleship.

In RL I'm Christian, but I'm pretty laid back about it...in fact for my own reasons I dislike most organized religon...

Anyway, I didn't much mind. Oh, and my character in the fic is going to have no religon, no extra complications for me...
