XCGS Mission Briefings

<<This thread completes the XCGS Forum Roleplay. Before every official mission a certain officer will post an entry in here which will be a re-enactment of how the troops in Tranquility Base get briefed about their missions. That is to say, all of the stuff here will almost no doubt be happening in the Briefing Room in Tranquility Base where an officer will hold a mission briefing. And once he/she's done with it comes the time when anyone participating in the mission can ask questions about anything. This is mainly just so as to make it feel a little bit more "real". :)

Carry on. :) >>

As the troops quickly made their way towards the front seats in the vast briefing room they already found Lieutenant Oskari on the podium waiting for all of the soldiers to take a seat. They had been scrambled to this briefing rather quickly over the intercom and were quite anxious as to what was so important that they all be assembled so quickly. Quickly the Lieutenant spoke up:

"Good day to you all. I'll have to keep this first briefing a short one unfortunately, as time is pressing on us. Just a few minutes ago our scanners detected alien transports deploying troops at the fringes of this region, where Tranquility Base now lies. Earth Force squads in the vicinity of the landings have soon after confirmed the presence of Mutons and Cyberdisks, some of which have managed to wipe out several Earth Squads already. But general intel coming from the field is confirming that they are sweeping this region and if the sweep is allowed to continue it's only a matter of time before Tranquility Base is discovered.

It is because of this that you will board the SkyHawk transport and proceed to take these alien squads out one by one. Now the SkyHawk's laser support gun will aid you in most instances so you should have some air support for a change, but don't rely on it too much. You will continue to be directed into various waypoints by myself, who will be directing your assaults from the Command Centre until Earth Force reports that we may cease our rounds. I'd also like to note that Private Harris will not be joining you in this mission due to the wounds he sustained in the previous mission."

Oskari then stopped, reconsidering to mention that it was actually partly a reward for him. He then concluded quickly:

"Details are on your panels, but otherwise that's it. Any questions?..."

<<Now respond.....if time permits....heh. :) >>

"all combat-ready X-Com soldiers, report to the briefing room" the voice thundered over the tranquility comms. The voice was unfamiliar; the previous operator died when the tranquility crashed. The new one was one of Earth Force.

Draco was at the time checking up on the newly refurbished engineering section, which would prove crucial to the effort, making sure things were up to snuff, or at least up to as much snuff as was possible. She told the engineering team that she would return at another time, and left for the briefing.

After the briefing, Draco spoke up with a suggestion.

"sir, if I may suggest, we should order the engineering teams to pack up any equipment they won't be needing in the immediate future. Doing so will help speed up the evacuation process should it come to that, and if it doesnt come to that, their' progress at getting the base online won't be hindered by having to do any unpacking. Also, how well defended will tranquility itself be?"

"Good suggestion Sergeant. Will take it into account. And Tranquility itself will only have meager defenses. Earth Force squads will be around so they should be able to stop an alien squad, but after that not much more, since it also won't matter. I suspect if we're found that the aliens will launch an all out assault using UFOs, something which I doubt we could hold off well enough, which makes it twice as important that the aliens do not learn of our exact location."

"Anything else?..."

And with no reply coming back in he then continued:

"Right! Then move out to the Armoury, equip yourselves and then onto the SkyHawk. It's waiting for you in the hangar. Dis-missed"

<<New mission. And since I don't have access to the files on my old computer this will have to do for now as there is NO Combat Mission Briefing available (including the armoury assingments. I'll deal out your weapons before sim)>>

Coming into the briefing room the troops settled themselves down slowly. A few of them were still mildly suffering from previous wounds like Stahley or Rina, but others like Draco had by now fully recovered. Regardless Oskari knew he'd need every last soldier for this paticular mission as he began:

"Okay! I assume that by now you all know the results from the last mission we had. However it is more than apparent that the previous mission was merely a stopgap and could only delay the inevitable. The aliens will no doubt be sending in MORE recon groups and in stronger numbers so that we won't be able to stop them next time. Therefore Captain Debevec and myself have concluded that the only way to keep the aliens from eventually finding our location..."

The screen behind Oskari now displayed several photos that looked somewhat familiar to the troops, but who remembered what it was when Viktor resumed:

"...is the destruction of the alien base that is surveying this sector, and one that you had initially wanted to scout during operation "Scavenger Hunt". Now taking this base out will most DEFINATELY not be an easy task. Firstly because of vast enemy numerical superiority, not to mention also the fact that, according to Earth Force intel, the place is a fortress. And even if we DO manage to take over the base there is always a risk that it manages to send a distress signal to the central European alien stronghold situated in Vienna. If that stronghold learns, that a force was so powerful as to wipe out a base like the one we intend to, they will no doubt send schock troops and UFO fleets to suppress us. Therefore it has become imperative that we take over the base without alerting the general alien command.

This task however will be placed upon certain experts within Earth Force who have knowledge of the alien language, so it is not our job. But what IS our job is that we protect those experts since they'll have to be inserted with the main attack force. But that is only the secondary objective. The primary one obviously deals with taking over the base.

Earth Force has managed to produce quite accurate schematics of the facility, but has never had enough experienced personnel to preform a commando operation. So that's the role we'll take on. Using a stolen alien transport we will make our way to the underground hangar of the facility. Once there it will be important to make our way as secretly as possible to the level one security chamber inside the base. Once we overpower the aliens guarding it, we shut down all automated defenses and with that Earth Force squads will begin their assault. X-Com will then proceed to the hangar and escort a group of the experts of the alien language to the bases Command Centre, clearing out opposition as it goes. Once there your final task is to protect the group until the base is cleared by Earth Force units and the base is completely secured.

Right...any questions?"

This was definetly a big operation, Rina thought. But it was risky. Very risky. "Sir," she said, standing up. "Wouldn't it be safer to find a way to disable the enemy's long range communications before we enter the base, so as to eliminate the risk of them sending an alarm to Vienna? A brief outtage could be viewed as an equipment failure, and the language experts can reassure the alien central command of that once the base is secured and communications restored."

"It would Corporal. IF we had the resources...Earth Force most definately does not have them considering their rag-tag nature and the only hope they were counting on was us. However Tranquility has no such devices either unfortunately. And since the connection to Vienna is obviously wireless with their comms array well shielded the only hope lies in maintaining contact but moving through the base quick enough with our specialists before the aliens send their distress signal. Unfortunately it's the best chance we've got...anything else?"

Alex, sitting on the far right side of the briefing room smirked.

"Yeah, I got a question, sir. How worried are we about being detected once inside the base? Now, some of us... ", he coughed with a little chuckle, "... might be able to move around the base undetected. But what about the elephant squad over here?" He tilted his head left in a 'hint hint' motion.

Viktor grinned, though only slightly and subtly, as the rest of the squad began to give the scout Private hard looks and a few responsive "Up yours." phrases were heard. He then replied:

"Well I'm SURE you'll be able to figure out a way Private Harris. After all you will be taking point as the resident scout so as long as everyone follows your lead we should be fine. That is of course until your ass gets shot off."

Smirking slightly he then continued:

"Anything else that is WORTH of mention?"

And noticing no other response other than a few frumping faces still pointed at Alexei he concluded: "Then let's get cracking team. I assume this will be a very important mission indeed, part of the reason as to why I'll also tag along with you. But I'm sure you're all up for it. Let's get going."

<<since Loonie hasn't contacted me in regards to whether he'll be showing up tommorrow, we can fallback to me GMing! He told me the specifics of the next mission!>>

At 9:00 PM, the X-Com Alpha Squad was called to the briefing room. As they climbed into their' chairs, they noticed that Lieutenant Oskari was not at the podium. It was Draco.

"In case you are wondering, Golem is out doing some diplomacy with Earth Force. I have been put in charge of the mission. Regardless, remember that city we initially searched during operation 'scavenger hunt'?

"Oh you mean the city you ordered us to violate the Antares conv.." Harris quipped in.

"AHEM. Yes, that city. Both X-Com and Earth Force have abandoned it, so chances of friendly fire are minimal this time. However, we have reason to believe it has been overrun by aliens. Nothing truly organized, but nothing to scoff at."

"Disorganized? Why?" McAllister asked.

"because the aliens came from the cult building we located during the same operation, and attacked afterwards. Remember that? Apparently there was an intel loop and we missed some, which proceeded to escape and hide in the city. Our mission is simple: We kill anything we find. Any further questions?"

Alexander was sitting next to Harris, barley even paying attention to the misson.

His head swam, he was getting sick, he knew he had to be. He was about to say something when Harris saw him and moved his lips, Alex could only guess he was asking if he was okay. Alexi shook his friend's shoulder roughly, trying to get him to snap out of it. That wasn't a good idea. Alexander turned his head and vomited all over the briefing room floor.

"Sorry... ma'am... may I be excused?" he asked, trying to get up, before vomiting again.

OOC: Sorry, I won't be able to make it for a couple weeks until my internet connection is all hooked up, which will be about two weeks. Sorry :) I really regret it. Could someone maybe e-mail me with updates and such so I dont get left behind?

Draco wondered as to the convenience of timing a vommitting to right after she asked if there were any questions. But it is hard to fake a vomit, and Paladin wouldn't try skipping a mission.

"Very well. Report to te medical bay immediately. Don't expect a purple heart for this."

"Yes ma'am." Paladin said as he lumbered out of the briefing room. For a moment he considered going back and cleaning up the innards of his stomach that he had just unleashed from his mouth, but than thought better of it as he felt another coming on. God. why did I have be sick now? He half thought, half mumbled on his way to the lavatory before he went to the medical room.

<<New mission! Albiet no site update as of yet. :) Hope this will do for now though...>>

Date: 30th of December, 2085

After finally being cleared by the doctor to active duty, Oskari shook his head a little bit as the first soldier entered the briefing room. A lot of Tranquility's manpower was knocked out of action after the last mission, where Blue Team fought in a city district filled with mutants and alien refugees from the once crucial alien base nearby.

A long wait was in order for Tranquility Base and X-Com in general and still it seemed as if it was not quite enough, since many soldiers were still suffering wounds, that did not allow them to participate today. Nonetheless it was not as if today would be a day for a big operation. Just the kind of thing to awaken the troops after some time of inactivity...

"Okay. I know that you're worried since we're already undermanned and the risk grows even greater with so few soldiers on this mission. However Earth Force has this time given us 100% assurance that this mission should be alien free."

A soldier grumbled slightly, since he had heard of "blue milk runs" like this during this campagin that went awry real fast. Viktor continued:

"South west of our position, and of the town's position nearby us, lies a valley in which a good amount of mines and excavation operations were underway until, of course, the alien invasion. Earth Force could not abtain these mines before, due to the alien base that was active before, but now that we've taken it out these mines are ours for the taking. Nonetheless Earth Force is cautious and knowing our precarious position at the moment have decided to assign us the task of performing recon on all of these mines. Now they assure us that the chance of aliens guarding the mines is next to naught, since they were well hidden and no alien activity whatsoever had been detected there before. So all things considered this seems like an easy mission for once.

Our tasks are obvious. We enter the mine complex from one of the entrances and proceed to clear the tunnels underground. Come upon anything worth of interest that you can transport into the SkyHawk and it's ours. Our weaponry and equipment will be of a light nature due to the recon nature of this mission and also two Earth Force soldiers will assist us because of our undermanned nature. Any questions?"

Harris then lifted his hand:

"Yes sir. Since it's just you and me on this mission do you want me to update our KIA status on the roster after or before the mission?" snickering slightly with a hint of disbelief afterwards.

Oskari sighed as he centered on the ONLY soldier that was actually present and replied in a defensive tone of voice:

"Well it WAS a good speech I planned for today now, WASN'T it?!?"

<<Heh heh. Couldn't resist adding this end. :) >>

<<Late late late! Must type type type!!...>>

Date: 31st of December, 2085

As the X-Com troops started to arrive he noticed that quite a few of them were moving a bit differently than usual...just tiny little nuances as they moved. But I guess that would happen to a wounded person...

"Okay. During our recent recon mission, me and Harris performed together with two Earth Force soldiers, a nearby mine network has been found out to contain alien hybrids hostile to our cause. They have been surmised to quite likely work for the aliens and as such must be eliminated with all haste so that those mines fall into our hands and we can begin recieving some much needed materials.

Our task is simple. Enter one of the many tunnels that lead to the mine network and eliminate all opposition. Earth Force elements will do the same for the remaining tunnels so there is no chance for any enemy to escape us. Due to low intel that's about all that we have for now, except of course for two soldier transfers who will even on this mission be wielding different than usual weaponry." he said looking to both Stahley and Rina "The rest of the details are on your panels. Any questions?"

A very tired Oskari showed up in the mission briefing room after all of the other soldiers had been there long before. Whilst the others had the day to themselves to recuperate from whatever New Year's Eve partying they might've done, the hapless Lieutenant had to work with Captain Debevec and two other Ops personnel in his planning room to come up with the mission he was about to present. Grumbling slightly he took the podium and uploaded the data in his pad to the table whilst beginning:

"Right....we've finally come up with our plans for the Vienna campagin and here's the scoop." he began, whilst clicking on a button that displayed a map of the former Austrian region onto the large wall behind him, so that the troops could see it clearly. "Our ultimate goal for this campagin is to seize control of Vienna and its surrounding region from the aliens in order to secure central Europe and ensure a good foothold against any other alien incursions. But before the actual seige can begin we must realise that we are greatly outnumbered and quite possibly also outclassed, so the obvious fact lies ahead of us that we must stage this seige very slowly and carefully so that we even have a chance of success."

Clicking on another button at the table the map changed behind Oskari. A broad red circle came up and overlapped much of the terrain with its center being in Vienna as Oskari continued:

"This is the alien's scanning range, approximately 100 km in each direction. Should any suspicious flyer activity or any X-Com craft be detected by the aliens within this radius, they will immediately scramble their forces against it and do their utmost to destroy it. So obviously to be detected by this during the first stages of the campagin is most definately going to signal the end of it all for us and Earth Force. However, whilst these alien scanners can detect airborne vehicles they are virtually useless against ground vehicles. Which is what we'll be aiming for."

Clicking yet again on the table the map now showed a long twisting green route heading from X-Com Tranquility towards an area a bit away from Vienna as Viktor began yet again:

"Our approach to Vienna will therefore be a subtle one over land, where we will hope to avoid any alien patrols along the way so as to decrease our chance of detection even more. Hopefully we will arrive at our destination by the end of tommorow, though if that will not be the case then we will have to make do in the wilderness. Once we arrive at the destination, we are to set up camp and secure the surrounding region. We should construct a base after that at the location, which should serve as a staging point for all our activity in the region."

Shutting the display he then concluded:

"That is all. Be sure to check your panels for any details. And I would like to remind you that since this will be an extended leave from Tranquility that our supplies will be severely limited, so make sure to make all your shots count, because ammunition will not be in abundance. Any questions?"

Draco stood up as Viktor asked for questions.

"Yes, sir. I doubt we are ready yet for an attack. You say that we can approach via ground vehicles, correct? Then we should wait for the APC to be rennovated. Tech has only 1/10 of the way to go, which involves mostly testing procedures. If we could but delay this assault for a mere couple of days, we could approach faster, and with more supplies to use in the storage of the APC. There is also the element of how I doubt we are ready for this assault even with the APC, but I douobt you'll listen to this"

Anticipating a response like this from the Sergeant, but hardly in the mood to have to prove himself as a compassionate Lieutenant, Oskari retorted:

"The APC, that is 90% renovated, will come along the ride. The engineering staff have noted that several glitches may occur due to it not being complete, but aside from that it should work sufficiently I believe. Also wether you like it or not Sergeant the aliens will sooner or later discover that we took out that alien base during the operation "Counterattack". Now do you want to try and hold down their barrage of forces at Tranquility Base where they'll cut us down like dogs, or would you rather attack them before they attack us and at least give us some chance of victory? Next question, if any."
