Seven Nights in Hong Kong

Actually I don't know if it is really seven nights, but it sounded good to me.

 

Welcome back to the shadows my friends. Last time we were visiting Berlin, now we will move few years in time and to another city: Hong Kong. With this new campaign brought by Harebrained, you will delve in a futuristic-magical Asian culture. With the Kickstarter project being very successful some areas of the game were changed. The noticeable area will be the Matrix itself. Some people did not enjoy the change, I'm in the other group and actually liked the change. The second change is in magic and it's special power - the lay lines. Apart of reducing cooldowns, there are some more additions, like the spells can bounce from characters, or a caster gets HP regeneration. So without further babbling let's start the adventure.

 

 

 

In this story our hero is a human mage called Joey Malone (should be Mallone but I screwed up. A cookie for anyone who will guess the reference of who that might be - preferably without Googling). Although he is a mage he's starting advantage is high charisma. He was raised on the streets, and later did some shadowrunning gig for a corporation. Therefor his starting etiquette is Gang and Shadowrunner with further enhancement to Academic and Corporate. He is also intelligent so he can handle some more advanced stuff. In general Joey is a good person, although you won't find much altruism in him, he may on occasion help someone.

The story begins when Joey receives a message from his foster father Raymond. The message was a little criptic, but he asked Joey to come to Hong Kong, because he needs help. Joey then took the first boat to Hong Kong and met with Duncan in Victoria Harbour.

Unfortunately Duncan was also clueless of what is going on and Raymond was nowhere to be found or heard from. Duncan was also accompanied by his superior officer - Carter (is it me or Carter is sort of common name for a partner in law enforcement?).

Anyway Duncan said, that we ought to meet Raymond in the plaza on the other side of the pier. So without more delays they head out. However oddly enough the gate out of the pier was solid shut and there was no way to open it. They had to take a detour through the construction site. It was obviously a trap, because they were attacked by some gangers.

Once they were dealt with, they moved out of construction site. In one of the back alleys, there were more gangers and the game introduced new mechanic - battle preparation. When there are hostiles nearby you can now switch to turn based mode and pre-buff and take a better position before combat begins.

When the gangers were dead, the path further along finally led to the plaza where Joey and Ducan were to meet Rayomnd. But it looks like there was more company. They were Shadowrunners and it looks like they were hired by Raymond too. Unfortunately Rayomnd never turned out.

Once they got along with the Shadowrunners and everyone went into chill mode, suddenly a Hong Kong police ambush happened. Carter, the troll and other shadowrunner got their heads blown by the snipers.

The situation was bad as there were a lot of snipers hidden somewhere. The Ork shaman girl told that there is an escape route just at the end of the street. We need to get there but the user of cover is mandatory to survive. Slowly moving ahead and killing any cops on the way, they have managed to lose to pursuit in the sewers (yes it's sewers again).

It looks like Raymond had some powerful enemy and this enemy knew that Duncan and Joey are suppose to arrive in Hong Kong, and now there is APB on them and they need to vanish, become ghosts, become SINless. Duncan didn't took that well. First of all he has anger issues, secondly he was a cop himself. Their shadowrunning friends are also in deep shit.

They however know someone who can help. Kindly Cheng, a local gang lord-lady. In current situation Duncan and Joey don't have any other options. She operates in Heoi and that's where our heroes go.

Upon arriving to Heoi, Duncan begun to brake down, but Joey managed to calm him somehow, just like in the past. When all was good, they went to see Kindly Cheng. She was a hard-ass, but very intelligent and reasonable. If approached correctly she could be your "best friend".

It appears Raymond dealt with Kindly Cheng and through her he hired the shadowrunners Joey and Duncan met. The current situation puts her in a tight spot. She knows that she needs to help them or else her reputation must suffer, but there is always a price to pay. From now on Joey and Duncan will be working for her as a shadowrunners. And as for first task, they need to deliver a message to a certain person called Strangler Bao.

Currently Duncan and Joey are fucked and the only thing can do is to burn their SIN. Auntie has asked them on a mission to deliver the message to strangler Bao.

They can choose one person, and despite Is0bel probably won't like it, because she was born in the place where we are going, a decker is always good to have. Auntie has also asked that we shouldn't kill any of the Yellow Lotus thugs. Also Is0bel mentioned where we might find Bao.

During the hike, Joey found a beat up woman. She introduced her as a scholar on a research mission on feng shui. She has asked us to help her in her studies, by "adjusting" few things.

Once near the Bao's den, Joey has convinced the guard to let him through, but that's not the way he will enter. There still more things to do. So they head to the underground part of the area. In the underground area, there was the last thing to fix for the student, and a side entrance to Bao's lair. When everything was "fixed" the student was not pleased with the results of the work. Looks like this place is really screwed.

Back to Bao. Now we can use the side entrance Is0bel has opened. There is another console that she can jack into. Now welcome to the new improved Matrix:

In previous versions decker jacked-in and all was done in TB mode, there were white IC's and every turn alarm meter raised and then Black IC's appeared. Now the exploring is in RT mode, but the decker must watch out for the tracers. Traces have their own paths indicated by the white lines, once they spot the decker, the combat begins and they increase shit tone of alert per turn. Once the alert reaches threshold a standard security is dispatched, alarms are triggered and all the bad stuff can happen. Occasionally on some nodes with tracers there can be standard white IC's, but they don't increase alert that much.

In previous versions, every important nodes where guarded by some guardian IC's and in order to access them decker had to kill every guardian. Here they are protected by blocker IC. Decker can force open it, by increasing alert by a truck load, user password if applicable or play a minigame.

The minigame is a two parter. On the left side there is small number pad, which is "Simon Says" game. It allows the decker to increase the time to hack the blocker. It has 7 stages and every second stage the difficulty increases. Also the higher level the blocker the less time there is. Every successful stage in Simon Says adds 10 seconds. When you're done with Simon Says, the decker has to guess the combination of the strange glyphs. The hints for the answer appear on top of the screen. Once the correct combination is selected, the node is accessible. Failure increase the trace.

 

 

So that's Matrix. Now back to Bao. Of course Bao at first was acting all high and mighty, but once he listened to Kindlys Cheng information, he suddenly lost all the vigor.

The message was delivered, now time go back to Auntie Cheng. We kept our deal, and she kept hers. Joey and Duncan are now SINless. She also found news about Raymond being dead. Of course this information sounded a little fishy. There was also a footage of Raymond being assaulted by a man wearing plastic mask of some sorts. So now Joey and Duncan must find this plastic faced man and find out what he knows about Raymond. But this will require time and so Kindly Cheng has proposed them to work for her as shadowrunners.

Not sure what you've meant there by "impressive".

 

 

Joey's first night in Hong Kong and already started with bad dreams. As ordered he goes to visit Kindly Cheng upon having some sleep. During Joey's sleep Kindly's Cheng men have caught HKPF officer - a shitbird as she called him. Wanted to be a big hero and scored a lot of money. Unfortunately he only scored a bullet to the head.

Joey was also explained how things are ruled here in Hong Kong. There is no true government and the megacorps practically can do whatever they want, they even have their own circle of bad ass people.

When Cheng was done with the cop, it all went official that Joey and Duncan will shadowrun for her and she will find everything about Raymond and Plastic-Faced man. After this, Joey went back on the boat and studied everything about shadowrunning from the computer. It's the same kind of computer you saw in Dragonfall.

Before there will be any missions done, there are lots of NPCs to talk to. In between missions you can spend an hour talking to some NPCs, be it vendors or just some locals.

 

For example we have here three locals: Gin, Shyu and Lau. You can talk to them about the strange dreams, however the conversation is not that long and generally doesn't add up anything special.

Next is Reliable Matthew, a drone vendor for riggers. He's story builds up a little later.

Next person on the list is Crafty Xu. She sells all kind of magical stuff for shamans and mages like Joey. She is also your "dreams expert". Her mother studied those bad dreams in the past and left some notes. Crafty discarded all of this, but now is persuaded to study her mothers work.

Next person is "Maximum Law" a local smartass decker. He is a representative of a bigger group of deckers.

Then we have Kai family, that's running local Club 88. Frederick is the bouncer, he dreams of becoming a pirate, like his father (but his father wasn't a pirate only a sailor).

Henry is the head of the family, he has quite interesting story to tell.

Callum sells drugs. Remember kids don't do drugs.

And last is Ermine, she sells guns, lots of guns, but Joey is a mage, so he doesn't need then.

Next client is cyber-doc - Ten Armed Ambrose (or just Ambrose). He is an ex shadowrunner. There's also quite a story behind him.

There is last one merchant for monks, but I've completely forgot about him until later.

On his first assignment Joey took the Museum job. Nothing like night time robbery of some antiques and mystical things. On arrival Mr. Drake informed him, that the book might be in the basement. He is suppressing the alarm, so the team can steal without any problems, at least for a while.

But first before any stealing will be done, a manager office must be visited. Because we should find any useful information first. The managers office had a strange bookcase. Unfortunately Joey is not strong enough to force it open. There was also a terminal with useless information. There is also a strange control panel that requires password, however the password is not that simple to find. You must be really clever to find it. There is a hint on the wall and either you are well known art expert, or you go ask uncle Google.

Once the mysterious bookshelf is opened it was holding the most valuable items to steal. After that the team steals other most valuable stuff to get a total value of 10k+ nuyen. Next comes the basement. One of the ancient books was pretty much close to the exit. The other book was guarded by gargoyles and some other strange monsters that teleport victim to some strange place.

When the last of the books was in Joey's possession, Mr. Drake called and said that we need they need to go to the security room to wipe any data about the intrusion. Once they have reached the stairs up, a strange mummy appears. Of course being helpful Joey accepts the deal, not that he probably won't be able to use this token.

Heaving reached the security room and wiping all data, the team happily goes towards the exit, but then HKPF appears. And since we are breaking the law, the team has to fight for life. Once the first wave of police was dealt, Mr. Drake called with a evacuation plan in hand. There was a side exit, but now it is also guarded by the police.

When the police was dealt with, the team exits the museum.

After each mission, there will be an episode dedicated to the NPCs. There is so much reading here that it takes quite a while.

 

In this episode we meet new addition to the team: Racter. He is a peculiar fellow from Russia. Very intelligent, well mannered and educated. He has his unique drone that he has been working on, sort of his life creation. He has a very colourful history, a little creepy at the end with a strange vision for mankind.

As next mission, Joey chose helping solve mysterious killings for Whampoa. Whampoa are technical freaks that are all about decking. Their elders have been recently horribly murdered one by one.

Once on the place first thing is to contact the elders themselves. They have described few deaths of their kin - pretty gruesome stuff.

When the elders done their talking, the team went see Porter Lam and to see the last place of murder.

Lam wasn't kidding, the whole area is a mess.

Because Joey is a mage he can use Astral Perception and have a more clear view of what has happened. The visions showed, that the elder that was murdered was not expecting anything, that means the killer was very silent and effective. Another worthy note is that a blood splatter on wall was not natural. It looks like someone made the splatter on purpose. Nothing more interesting can be gained. It's time to ask the locals around.

 

The locals didn't help much although there was a mention about other elder Magpie. She used to be the best of them all, but she and others had a really bad argument about stuff and she has vanished. The other lead was a gang in a sewers. There was also an incident with HKPF. Of course the elders when asked about it, were very suspicious in their answers, as if they were hiding something.

Before we go check Magpie's shop let's first investigate that gang. They confirm that HKPF was here on a manhunt, but it looks like they have failed. Because Joey is a master at diplomacy, he managed to convince them that it will be OK, if he had free reign on investigating the place.

The place wasn't too big to search, and with his knowledge Joey found a piece of armour belonging to a Japanese Renraku unit. The Renraku are very high class military unit. Fanatically devoted to Japanese government. But what would be that unit doing here, and why HKPF was involved in this? Also the scene of crime suggested that whatever HKPF was attacking it was very fast as they were just spraying bullets wildly.

Going to the Magpie's place Is0bels takes notice that this place is trashed like someone was here to take something but it wasn't Magpie herself. In her private desk there was an information about a stockroom. That's a good lead, but we need a key. Also in bathroom, Duncan noticed a lot of blood. Maybe Magpie also was murdered? Well one thing is left to do, is go ask Porter Lam about that storm drain key.

In the sewers they have found a pile of body parts and stuff. This is definitely the work of the killer. Searching further in a storm drain Joey have found a necklace with a silver pendant that depicts a magpie. Curious. Moving further, the team met a bunch of people doing some shady business. It was them who broke inside Magpies shop. Because they are of not concern to us, Joey only asked for the stockroom key and everyone was on their own merry way.

In the stockroom they found out, that it looks like someone is living here. After some inspections, the killer himself approached.

He is Gaichu an ex-Renraku soldier, who was unlucky to be contracted with a terrible disease and has transformed into a Ghoul, but the transformation was not 100% complete and he retained most of his humanity. He of course told everything, that he was hired by Elder Ng, to kill Magpie, which he did, but then when it came to payment, the elders double crossed him and send HKPF to deal with him. You can probably guess what happened next.

 

That's not very nice of them, and now we will confront them. The confrontation was a very tough battle of words. Of course the elders being elders tried to deny everything, but eventually all the evidence that was presented to Porter Lam was very clear that the elders are to blame.

On the next assignment Joey takes the mission to kidnap Cheung-Sing "Rooster" Lo. The client said he will him in Shanrgi-La (di da) restaurant, and is being escorted by a brutish bodyguard called "Talon".

Upon arriving, Joey starts using his charms on a waitress to learn few things about the victim and his bodyguard. And finds pretty interesting stuff.

So the ork has problem with this fish. Wouldn't it be nice to convince a cook or someone to make him a surprise. But before that. Joey noticed a gloomy fellow over the bar. He has problems with his coworker stealing his clients. But back that ork. Joey went to see the chef of the kitchen. Convincing him wasn't easy, but Joey managed to convince the chef to deliver that fish to the ork, just because he wasn't nice.

So that's one problem taken care of. Now kidnapping the guy will probably cause some chaos, so let's deal with this David guy, maybe Joey can get that intel, and the two might get into a fight.

So well now, our victim was a fool, but David here is an asshole. So Henry, you want to here this:

So the guys went outside to deal with their problems. That probably will make security busy enough to not notice the chaos from kidnapping the guy. Let's wait for him to show up.

Oh, hey looks like someone have some food problems.

 

So since Talon is having arguments in the kitchen, that means our "Rooster" is free for grabs. Although he had some guards, they were a little puny. Our "Rooster" boy is more of a chicken. Good god, he screamed like a girl.

With him finally in check, the team uses the back exit to slip unnoticed. Unfortunately there is a side problem. The HKPF is on it's way. Probably because of those two damn idiots. On hour way to exit, there were two triad thugs, unfortunately the team couldn't pass them without a fight. Once killed, they found a jackpoint for Is0bel to hack in and open the closed door. But meanwhile Talon bursted out from the restaurant, and boy he was pissed.

Once every triad thug was dead, the team made it back home.

On next mission, Joey takes the spying mission on Nevill Ma, a successful movie producer. His colleague is very jealous of his success and miraculous comeback from recent accident. In addition he wants to acquire a movie star from Nevill.

 

On arrival first thing first, is to check local Matrix network. Thanks to Is0bel, the team has acquired room codes to Nevills apartment and invitation to the party. The first eavesdropping on Nevill only reveled that he can be an asshole.

 

Now to acquire the information of his fast recovery. But unfortunately no one has the information and of course Nevill will not say it out loud. Not even astral perception revealed anything useful. However Nevill mentioned about Miss Feng. Interesting.

So without any solid clues let's check Nevills room. His apartment didn't reveal anything special expect for a sturdy locked door. But without access card, they are not getting in. Maybe someone might be persuaded to help?

Thank you Penny. Now back to the apartment. His personal terminal didn't have anything useful, but in his office...

Well now, looks like Mr. Ma is associating with Vampires. And she does make an interesting offer. A duel at midnight. And by duel she meant standard gang fight. Oh well time to teach her a lesson.

It's another talk to the NPCs episode. During visitation to Crafty, Joey meets a well know Elf.

Looks like Aljernon is everywhere. Also Crafty learned something important and she probably isn't too far from the truth. It appears that all the bad dreams are because of some demons called Yama Kings. Interesting.

As next mission, Joey took the job that requires some Feng Shui sabotage. In this world Feng Shui is not only just simply geomancy. It allows the flow of good Qi, so that people in the area are always positive. We need to wreck this place, but in such a way that it should be subtle.

 

The first task would be to acquire access to the office area. We only have a basic card that can get us this far.

Fortunately there was a Matrix entry point on this level and as you've probably guessed it, it contains all the necessary access nodes to upgrade our card.

Once arrived at the office, we could start trashing it freely. However after a certain amount of Qi disruption, some guardians appeared.

Once the guardians were dealt with it was time to move to the top floor. There the team had to fight another group of guardians. And after that when the place was trashed, the real "gardeners" arrived.

Of course they had to be eliminated as well.

Here is another after mission break episode when Joey talks with friends and other NPCs. In this part you can learn that Raymond, the foster father of Joey and Duncan is in fact Edward Tsang. Yep he is son of the supreme ruling lady of Hong Kong that kidnapped Raymond and put APB on Joey and Duncan. You didn't expect this kind of twist did you?

Gobbet has gone missing, and Is0bel knows where she might have gone. Joey also because Gobbet was talking stories about her old place. Something is wrong at the Sinking Ship. Joey and Is0bel are going to find out and bring back Gobbet alive if possible. As they arrive, they are immediately attacked by some devil rats.

When they've killed the rats, there were two people waiting as a welcoming comity. They briefed Joey and Is0bel on current situation. Looks like this rat problem was what Gobbet came here for.

Once inside, Joey and Is0bel went to find Gobbet. And as usual, nobody seen anything. Eventually they have found her. And she came with a warning.

It looks like the duo from the top was under the influence of something that was controlling the devil rats.

Of course Gobbet came here with a plan to sink the Sinking Ship. That's not the best or brightest idea of hers. Instead of blowing this ship, let's find an alternative way. Ok back to Cadmus, who preferred to stay anonymous a moment ago. He told everything what has happened, how Malvina lost control over herself due to that strange amulet Gobbet returned after a job long time ago. In the end he offered a solution that Joey should create a Mutiny and take the fight to this new Rat King.

After talking to some people, Joey managed to get few people to turn on the Rat King.

All now left what to do is to go down and face the rat king. Of course Gobbet was keep going on scuttling the ship, but Joey ain't like that. Let the mutiny begins.

Once the Rat King was damaged enough it retreated and now Gobbet had to steal that amulet.

When the Shiny Object was in Gobbets possession, they could finally kill the Rat King.

After the battle, Gobbet had a little chat with Cadmus.

Upon return Kindly Cheng had some information for Joey. It looks like she found out who the Plastic-Faced man is. Joey in return informed here who really Raymond is.

Looks like this story is slowly coming to an end. But there are few more jobs to finish.

Although Joey has the information about Plastic-Faced Man, there are few more issues to take care of, like for example helping Is0bel.

Is0bel had it all planned nice, let's how good her plan was. Joey enters the convention through the service entrance.

In the service hallway there was a panel for a decker to hack. If Joey was master decker he could forge admin pass and be done with the whole operation. Sadly he isn't so you will have to witness all of this now. Of course the pathway to the convention leads through the Kitchen and the manager wasn't happy to see Joey there. But Joey has silver tongue and manages to pass the manager without any problem.

With the staff uniform, Is0bel can proceed with second part of the plan.

So now Joey needs to mingle with the guests. Well Joey maybe isn't a decker but is probably smarter then that group put together.

However there are few more entertaining guest. Now when Joey was done mingling with the guests, time to proceed with second part. And as usual plan goes, something goes bad.

And by the way, she is very bad at conversations... anyway thank to Joey she managed to get out from the problem this time. However once she was in the elevator, everything went to hell, because of one person...

So now we will have to fight our way to the Rhombus. After the fight Is0bel had a nice little chat with Rhombus, and it looks like all this situation wasn't like Is0bel said it was.

On next mission now Joey will help Racter. They will infiltrate Ares Asia Holding, a big bad corporation.

Upon entering the building, Joey swiftly passed the secretary with some corpo language stuff. First thing on the agenda is to sabotage the elevator. This will allow to move on higher floors without and ID checks. Secondly some employee left open terminal with some password to some IC blockers. Sloppy. Also nearby was a Matrix entry point. Is0bel knew what to do. Last thing to do on this floor was to find the information where Dr. Taylor's lab is.

Once that's done the team uses the stairs. There we do what we came to do. Plant financial data, plant camera footage, but when they have reached main lab area, a sudden explosion happened. It looks like there is other team on the job in the same building. Strangely they decided to go loud. Of course their problems are suddenly our problems. However they didn't have the upper hand in negotiations. Unfortunately Racter says that the key those runners have is very important to us. So we will make a deal.

All in all they don't appear that bad, and they sort of recognized Mr. Sparks as a big shot. But right now we will have a Knight Errant to fight.

So now the team must fight the Knight Errant and of course the first thing is to get rid of that gas. Remember in the Matrix there were valve points to interract, they are probably now active, so Is0bel, run for it. Once everything was clear on the floor, time to escape. But the guards are being annoying and delay us more.

Time to fight another round. When that's done everyone escapes to the underground. Now when there is some time both teams have a little chat. Looks like there are some conflicts in interests. However there is a solution. The question is would you pass up a LASER GUN to earn some friends? Eh.... who needs a laser gun, it's just a laser gun.... we won't miss the laser gun right?

On the way back without the laser gun, the team fought some Kinght Errant pursuers. We didn't need a laser gun to kill them though. Once reached the old MTB station there was another ambush. Looks like another group for the laser gun. WHAT'S WITH EVERYONE WANTING THAT LASER GUN. It's just laser gun nothing special. You can buy laser gun in your local laser gun shop right? Anyway they were not nice and did not deserve that laser gun.

Once they were dead it was time to say last good bye to that laser gun.

There are still few missions to do. Joey once used Captain Jomo help with Gobbet mission, now he will use his services again. We are going to infiltrate a ship and kill some strange creature. The weather is very crappy but as Duncan says it will be advantageous to us.

There are 3 fights ahead and they are not very hard. Once inside now it's sneaky time. In a room nearby there is a terminal and Is0bel could make a fake alarm luring away some of the guards. In other room there was a electrical panel. A little re-wirering and we have access to the cameras.

With that done, we had now easy access to the objective.

Once the objective was accomplished the client called, but he was a little evasive about the payment. Soon after someone else called with counter proposal... I don't trust anyone here now.

Without any choice for payment Joey and the team go meet the contact. On place they make a little surveillance action. Looks like our client came with and "army".

Once the client has been reached all hell broke lose. Joey decided not to side with anyone. It was free for all, except we were in the middle. But at this stage, we are too tough to be beaten to some mercenaries.
