Let's Play X-Com: Terror from the Deep

My avatar is an alien that was going to appear in TFTD but at some point or another was removed from the game for whatever reason. How does this relate to this discussion? It doesn't.

The Ethereal were and are a beast in X-COM/XCOM Enemy Unknown/UFO Defense. Rightly so. But the Tasoths. Ho boy, they have no goddamned bones! Take a sonic pistol discharge to the face of a Tasoth from an Aquanaut who can shoot 2 or 3 times. He'll say "thanks, mofo can I have another?" At which point his buddies will laugh and MC control your senior officer who detonates the 12 pulsars on his body and corpse. Not only killing the majority of your crew but the ship you rode in on. I bid you goodnight.

8-)

The strategy to blow open doors works better on the Cruiser thanks to the inner doors, since aliens are forced to expose themselves at an angle when they try to exit the sub. You have to otherwise make a judgement call when dealing with the other sub types. ;) It might have worked with the Escort, but I think you took the doors off too early. You need to take a bit of time time to set some troops around the sub doors before taking any action.

One good thing about the Tasoth is that they're watered down Ethereals and only their Squad Leaders have any powers. Also contrary to the Ufopaedia entry, Tasoth aren't very brave. Their soldier classes have low bravery and panic quite easily. The main difficulty that they pose is their high health, which does allow the soak up a bit of damage.

As for the music you linked... IT AIN'T ME, I survived and was promoted to Captain!!! https://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b348/SpaceVoyager/Smiley/xtreme.gif Love the song, back from the days Metallica still knew how to make great music.

Neptunesnookgames, thanks for keeping me alive. I owe you one. ;)

I finally have a couple Lobsterman free missions... stop trying to spoil my excitement!!

Yeah, I was so excited to use the "blow the doors off" technique I forgot to wait for everyone else to get in place. It ended up causing quite a bit more harm than good, they didn't seem to have the same problem of seeing through the smoke like I did.

You took some pretty nasty shots on that mission, I forgot to see how many days you're out but I think you'll be quite a long lived commanding officer... until you get out of the medbay anyways.

You're in the infirmary with sexy Nurses attending to your nether regions. If you lived in the U.S.A. SV you'd be awarded with a Purple Heart.

I have a confession to make....( takes a deep breath) I've given shitty Aquanauts names like Justin Beiber or Iggy Azalea as scouts just to watch them crumble up and die. Whilst people who I idolize such as Edgar-Allen Poe and H.P. Lovecraft destroy the alien threat. I know.. I know what you're all thinking. How can this sick bastard ever want to hurt our beloved Stars such as Miley Cyrus or Leoretardo Capaho? Simple, I'm sick and I'm a bastard.

Ok, I see you are finally heading to our advice. This is good. Keep it up.

I've commented on YT, but I say again. If you are about to fire last torpedo, you will have to switch to aggressive mode. When last one is fired the sub takes the follow stance and the USO magically is counted as farther and farther away. The torpdeo range is connected to your subs range so it will never reach the USO despite being fired on the correct range.

The death of Space Harrier was due to strange handling of the explosions. I did ask Tycho on TFTDExtender can this be patched somehow, don't remember what he said though. This can be negated by the armour tough. If he would wear aqua plastic armour he wouldn't die from the explosion at least.

You must still learn to control the panic. When you saw the 3 lobsters you went to: "OMG, OMG, what to do, what to do".

DPL's on a Heavy Cruiser? Okay, that's some serious fire-power they've dropped in your hands. Get one of those home and you'll have the backing of Disrupter Pulse Launchers on the colony assault. The Tasoth are armed to the teeth with them on the first level, so you'll definitely want to know how they work.

The strange death from the pipe happens in UFO as well. You'd shoot an alien, the shot misses and blows up a gas pump that's not close enough to hurt the alien, but then it dies anyway. Shenanigans.

Remember to wait the first turn before exiting the sub. The aliens are still at full TUs, so if you see one the moment you open the doors, it's often best to hold fire and stay inside the sub. Also don't forget you have the thermal shok bombs. They can be useful for one-hit knock outs or stunning tight groups of Lobstermen.

When throwing grenades on slopes, for some reason the game sometimes thinks it can't throw when it should be able to. Try raising the elevation up by one. It makes it work for some slopes. Also for enemies that have reached the apex after climbing slopes, you may sometimes have to aim a tile lower. Not sure, but it's likely caused by some sloppiness in how the game handles movement up and down slopes.

When running away from enemies (or from grenades about to go off), make sure you turn and face towards your foe. Try not to leave your back or your sides exposed to them. Especially with the advanced suits, you've got heaps more plating in the front. This increases your chance of survival.

Also don't forget you have the gas cannon to deal with the unconscious Lobstermen. That's the main reason to be hanging onto one this far into the game.

Yeah, I saw that on YT. I'll have to remember that one. Is that the same for UFO as well?

Lame, I still think he died of fright

Notice the outcome... All dead lobsters, only 1 shenanigan Xcom death! (until the second part at least wacko.png )

I don't think I've ever seen it before on UFO. Shenanigans indeed.

Yeah, that was a dumb mistake. poor Tengu :(

Same as well, nothing was changed here.

Yes, you did good on the first part, but the moment you saw 3 lobsters you clearly went to panic state and almost made a mistake.

Lucky for us, you didn't.

Because in UFO there are too few possibilities. It can happen with the gas station on terror mission, round navigation table and alien entertainment. While the first one may happen at the early stage, the next ones will be encountered when you will have personal / power armour.
