Update: Stardock Entertainment has recently announced that the Early Access build of Galactic Civilizations III has received a major update bringing it to Beta 2 status.

Basically, the battles should be the biggest difference from previous titles. And will make the game GC 3 or leave it at GC 2.3. Which is why those will probably be presented last to polish them internally before letting the mob have its hands on it.

So, the final answer on battles is no pre-battle planning. I'm wondering about these ship roles though... If done properly, those could do the trick of having an "admiral" type of influence, which might be enough.
