Totally Going Iso

We dig this metric. I guess it's widely known we can never quite get our fill of cool games crawling with aliens in flashy isometric poses, traipsing about in a strategic way and trying to do their very worst per square tile, so, of course, Ionising Software's Isomer is right down our aisle.

Isomer is an isometric real-time strategy game with sandbox gameplay inspired by classic XCOM and dwarf fortress style games. It's open ended, designed to be played in a variety of ways with world exploration, survival, crafting and strategy all blended together in a retro format.

You control alien forces hell-bent on conquering enemy worlds for their resources. How long can you survive? What will you build and discover?

The worlds are procedurally generated, large and teeming with hostile forces, enemy bases, deep catacombs and life. Each play through is unique presenting different challenges and requiring different tactics with an enemy that responds to the way you play.

The psionically alienating features:

• Control an alien army hell bent on harvesting enemy worlds for their resources

• Real-time strategy, combat, world exploration and survival mechanics

• Adaptive AI which reacts and changes how the game plays depending on the choices of the player

• Almost unlimited variations of worlds to explore and conquer, no two games are the same

• Mine resources and build walls, buildings and fortifications to defend your ship from the angry inhabitants of the world

• Mutate your units into specialist troops from engineers to the vicious warriors

• Units gain new abilities and improve over time

• Explore dangerous underground caverns and ravines for resources and loot

• Attack and pillage human bases to hinder their war effort

• Destructible terrain with realtime lighting calculation

• Trade with passing supply ships for reinforcements and resources

They say there's more - the small but industrious development team behind this game is therefore very clearly plotting away to dominate all our free time in the not so distant future.

Good thing they've also let us in on the fact that they're just making a push to reach Alpha at the moment, or we'd have to burst out with a prompt and uncontrollable 'Shut up and take our money!'.

Version 0.8.1.1 of Isomer has just been released with big novelties tactically deployed, the most prominent of which as follows:

• New: Added day/night cycle with variable phase lengths determined by world seed.

• New: Units that are now hiding in the shadows not doing anything are no longer undetectable.

• New: Units that are in the shadows are now detected normally, however to be spotted the opposing unit needs to be at least 40% closer than usual.

• New: Added variable levels of enemy aggressiveness based on time of day and player actions.

• New: Added better feedback when unit cycle buttons yield no result.

• New: Water now spreads.

• New: Game now plays a random music track each time from the loaded pool.
