One of the more 'funny' things that happened in Apoc was a investigation of one of the Nutrivend 'sky-high green houses' - those places where food is grown.

4 squads deployed I moved one squad up the grav lift to the top level where I encountered a Skeletoid. Now from experience I know that they're hard sonsabitches to take down, so I aimed and fired off a missile. Which was a stupid thing to do when you consider the fact that the whole area is just something like 9 levels of glass. The missile exploded, killing the skeletoid outright, but glass, metal frames and god-knows whatelse was blown from their foundations on the 8th floor and fell.

I had a squad underneath their at the time. Afterwards I had 3 squads.

One other thing I've noticed in my latest game of Apoc (Easy) Is that the aliens so far have repeatedly inserted aliens into one of three buildings, the Transtellar hotel, Goverment luxery apartments, and one place they seem to like attacking is the local school...

Also in that same game my 3 teams entered that same school (after a few alien insertions later) and were clearing the place of aliens, my entry team enters into a 'power generator' room of some kind (the room with those long cylinders which are red in the middle) and at the same time a brain sucker jump out, now as this is real time it is possible to avoid them by simply running! However my squad opened fire as it was jumping and because of the way it was jumping and the way my team was moving the alien was shot in mid flight and it looked like it had been blown away from the team as it landed several meters away from the team!

hmm i just remembered an experience with a brain sucker and an anthropod. i was at an alien incursion in a corparate head quarter building (the one with the big stairs in front and giant pillars everywhere). In one of the small rooms in the front of the building near the huge stair case, i saw a bunch of brainsuckers so i went nuts with the devestator cannons, the entire part of the building gave away sending down several alien corpses down 7 or 8 stories along with a brainsucker and an anthropod. turns out anthropods cant survive an 8 story fall yet a brainsucker can.... is this is the game physics or an extreme fluke, as the circumstances havent been the same since, i havent been able to duplicate the scene  out of curiousity has anyone else encountered such a display of extreme falling aliens? :power:

I think you can chalk that one up to the fact that brainsuckers also come in pod form. If the anthropods were carrying any brainsucker pods with them at the time, the pods will be considered as 'on the floor' once the anthropod dies and the brainsuckers hatch.

This one is from numerous experiences. I've mentioned this one before in another thread, and pretty sure a lot of you have had this happen to you too.

The aliens in Apocalypse are very stupid in comparison to their bretheren in UFO and TFTD with regards to high explosive usage. They'll jolly well throw a vortex mine into a large crowd of their own companions just to get one of your soldiers. Or, fire a dimension missile at you point blank. Stupidity at its finest... but then again these aliens do have poppers. Even without the micronoids controlling them, I think they must be suicidal by nature. :power:

Once saw them do this in what I think was the engine room of a UFO. They threw a vortex mine, it fell short and blew the whole place to bits. Luckily I had my soldiers run away in time. This left big gaping holes in the floor. Only later did I realise that some of the anthropods managed to survive and had fallen out of the UFO with the floor. Spent ages looking for them too. Turns out they survived because their disrupter shields were still working and absorbed the fall damage.

hmm but it wasnt in pod form it was a full fledged mobile alien and the anthropod had a devastator cannon... i still find it strange. and yeah ive had problems with the alien stupidity. i dont like suicidal aliens much i prefer the ones that have some intelligence... makes you wonder how the dimensional aliens survived so long. :power:

EDIT: erk a battleship with all the anthropods and skeletoids with dimensional rocket launchers. all of them  has this happened before?

  • 5 months later...

This happened sometime after the aliens had acquired cloaking shields, and I had Toxiguns researched, with type C. On the aliens' turn, I see this anthropod walking around back and forth in a narrow hallway like an idiot. Now, the aliens aren't

exactly intelligent in this game, but usually, when I leave a bunch of my guys exposed at the end of a turn, the aliens might take a couple of pot shots. But no, not this guy - back and forth between the same two squares.

So, my turn, my guy does the usual thing, puts the cloaking device in his pocket, pulls out the toxigun, and I let loose with about half a clip of Toxin-C. At first, it looked like the shots were hitting thin air in front of the guy, but imagine my surprise when I suddenly see about five aliens drop dead out of thin air, equipment and everything. The guy who was walking around died eventually, too.

-----------------

Also related is a similar incident where, a considerable time after a lengthy firefight involving explosives, I'm having my guys storm a "grav lift", and suddenly, I hear

a scream, and a skeletoid drops out of thin air for no apparent reason.

-----------------

Finally, here's a classic:

"All right, I'll just launch a rocket down that hallway, an alien ran out of sight into there, but I don't feel like following it." ... --click--whoosh--BLAM--BLAM--scream--KABOOM--scream--KABOOM--PING--KABOOM--scream--half of the building collapses. Next turn, a single panicking skeletoid runs out and gets gunned down.

I've had weird things on both UFO and Apocalypse

UFO - I only had 7 men left alive and a base mission came up, so I thought sod it, I'll send them in for a laugh. My 7 men entered the base, first turn no sign of the enemy, enter enemy turn, I see SECTOID HAS PANNICED, I see this several more times, they just kept pannicing so I had a nice easy mission of picking off helpless Sectoids.

In Apocalypse I noticed that aliens do tend to infiltrate schools an awful lot, I'm suspecting Michael Jackson is one of the aliens.

I've had a few apocalypse missions where I've started a mission, heard a loud bang and then won the mission before I've had chance to do anything.

I've also had the odd X-Com agent with Arnie-disease, one X-Com agent was hit with about 8 disruptor shots, 3 grenades and a popper, he wasn't even remotely bothered by it. Incidentally in the next mission he was killed by a pathetic machine shot by a Sirius cult member ... I wasn't very happy.

yes, that happens. i wasted a week of my life discovering that.

oh yes, NickAragua, that is a bit of a but. your agents can see that running alien, but not the other ones. just like you can see the beams/bullets from the enemy, but not the acutal badguy himself. so just go ahead and be watchful: see where the beam is comming from and shoot at where it came from. your carnage will be your eyes.

In a Transporter UFO mission, I had a Squad Leader with a Marsec Body Armour fly above the UFO doors and open them. Four Anthropods stared at him and fired Pods around him. When the Brainsuckers emerged, they began jumping up and down, but not landing, they bounced back up halfway through the fall...

Needless to say, I was all liek "OMGWTFBBQLOL!!1!shiftone".

Also, I saw a Psyke Hovercar get chased by six Police Hovercars. It flew around the edge of the city with lasers and bullets a few pixels behind it for about a minute, then finally exploded when it turned.

On the hydroponics farm place. An alien threw a vortex mine which knocked down a major section of the farm killing all the aliens. Zero shots fired and zero casualties of x-com forces.

During a UFO invasion (4-5 UFOS poped out the gates) megapol was attacking a UFO and its missle missed and hit a marsec building. about 5 hawk airwarriors, 8 valks, and countless hovercars launched and attacked megapol and its buildings. After a massive air battle between UFOs, marsec, and megapol. 4 buildings where nearly totaled and countless more where shot up. At least 4 innocent bystandard vehicles where destroyed. My score went into the toilet and both megapol and marsec hated me (even thought i didn't even launch a single craft). I restarted from an earlier save but the battle was funny as hell to watch.

There was a skeletoid what shot 3 of its own comrads trying to attack one of my agents. He didn't panic but just was very inaccurate.

In UFO i had a terror mission where all the civilians where on the far side of the map. By the time i got over there i had 7 chrysalids and 8 zombies on my hands and no psionics or fly suits. After some tactical building use i managed to avoid any losses except for one suicide bomber who bravely took out 2 crabs. The funny part was after opening a door leading out of a warehouse i spotter 10 enemies at once.

oh yes, this isn't funny or wierd, but interesting. the "action music" check box is useless in cityscape i hear you say? well, it pretty much is until you see move than 6 UFO's if i remember correctly. that means the game designers obviously thought it wasn't a serious attack even if it were 2 motherships and 3 battleships... (i've only ever had action music in cityscape one or two times)

Once, when I was on a escort ship mission I captured a life megaspawn just with a guy armed with a Stun grapple. Because that Megaspawn wasn't performig any move. It just stood there staring at the wall. (Remember Kids: Never do Drugs while in combat.):)

Another classic one: In the first alien building I had a team of three moving down a passage. This was quite at the end of the mission. It ended up in a hallway with the last undiscovered spawning pad and loads off aliens. By the moment I showed up, I saw some dimension rockets and lots of vortex mines fly at my people. So I made them run like hell. After they took cover it was like BOOM-SCREAM-BOOM-SCREAM-BOOM-KABOOM. When I made them return there were about 75% of the aliens dead, the spawning pads where destroyed and the Hallway was no more existing.

about the megaspawn, yeah, theres this bug where the megaspawn just stand in a corner, and you can't see them, they can't see you until you're right next to them.

edit: hey, i like my psi-clone during battle! makes me feel like i'm shooting fire balls from my hand...!

I just saw an overspawn get dropped out of a mothership, It happened before my ships got out.

first thing it hit was one of those double level roads and kept walking forewards. It fell on him and killed him instantly.

If that wasn't good enough the mothership had attracted a few hovercars by firing on a building, for some reason the hovercar fired at the overspawn, it died before the missile hit so it destroyed the bottom section of a tall section of building.

For some reason the mothership decided to go low, real low, low enough for it to be crushed by the falling building.

Yay

Hah, I had something like that happen too. Only, in this case, I really ticked off Marsec because I was-er, well, very careless in their buildings. Can we say excessive collateral damage? I mean, it's not my fault poppers blow up or if those innocent rockets lying around don't cause any damage to the building.

Well, this was a very gradual thing and Marsec finally got fed up and refused any further bribes until I stopped attacking their alien 'friends'. Hah 'friends' indeed. A few hours after making this claim, the aliens decided that they'd had enough and decided to go nuts on the city. Guess who got targeted by the aliens?

Result? Ever since the raid, every attack on the aliens made Marsec happier with me - though they still refuse cash donations and still call the aliens their 'friends'. But they continue to cheer me on when I do nasty things to the aliens.

Rather an odd way to get your friends back, eh? Had this happen for a short while with the Cult of Sirius too after a rather amusing mishap with an Overspawn. This unusual friendship didn't really last too long for reasons I'd prefer to not elaborate.

Incedently, in that Marsec episode, were they doing business with you? Or did they cut supply?
