Creative Assembly delivers. Making good on the teasingly inflamatory word yesterday from Lead Designer James Russel on Twitter, an announcement has been made at GDC regarding a new Total War game.

Here's the scoop as reported at Eurogamer:

(...) Total War: Arena. It's a free-to-play online MOBA-style spin-off.

In it you "pitch history's greatest commanders and their armies against each other in massive team-based battles", announced the announcement.

Arena is entirely online and mixes RTS and MOBA gameplay. It's in development at Creative Assembly's UK HQ, is presumably a PC game (...)

This confirms some prior intel that had the name of the game datamined last month in connection with some anonymous Steam apps.

The game will be adhering to a free-to-play model and, again, according to Eurogamer, it seems signing up for the closed beta will be possible through this link, though at the moment it looks to lead to a dead end.

A brand new battlefield has been added to Total War: ARENA , Gergovia is the largest and most detailed map to date (...)

By fighting through the twisting streets of the town, Gergovia is rife with tight corners and hiding spots that allow for devastating encounters with often little room to escape. Getting cornered can lead to a swift demise. With the Roman siege garrison on one side, and the Gallic reinforcement camp on the other; win control of the town and it’s a clear downhill push towards the enemy encampment.

A new patch for the game has also now been released, as detailed here.
