In the comments section for an interview with 2K Marin about some odd-looking shooter at Gamasutra, Julian "X-COM" Gollop weighed in on turn-based gaming and what he's currently working on at Ubisoft Sofia.

QUOTE

Personally, I would have gone with a turn-based game system - but no one asked me. Actually, I was developing an X-Com style game called Dreamland back in 1999 - turn-based but 3D (actually very similar to Valkyria Chronicles in the way it worked). Sadly, it didn't see the light of day.

QUOTE

Publishers run a mile from anything with turn-based mechanics - it is regarded as too niche. RTS games pretty much killed off turn-based strategy games in the mid-90s - but now even RTS games are regarded as niche. So all my experience working turn-based games from 1983-1997 is now somewhat obsolete, despite the success of X-Com. However, I am now working on a turn-based tactical RPG which will be a 3DS launch title. Thanks to 'Advance Wars', 'Fire Emblem' and 'Final Fantasy Tactics' it seems turn-based games are not totally dead - at least for Nintendo handhelds. I would also argue that Pokemon has a lot of parallels with X-Com in its game system, despite being classified as an 'RPG'. The core of Pokemon is a turn-based tactical battle enriched by a sophisticated higher level meta-game that allows players to experiment with many game elements and combinations of forces - and Pokemon is the second most successful game franchise in the world. If done right, would an X-Com game with a turn-based combat system be successful? Absolutely!

Quick, someone give that man a wad of money and tell him to go make a PC game!

It recently came to my attention that DOSbox has found it's way to the iPhone and iPad. I'm sure many XCommies will automatically realize what this means. Keep in mind however that this port is still in a early development stage. As shown in the screenshots, it is capable of running TFTD but i'm sure UFO will also. Currently the performance is quite lackluster but this will hopefully be fixed in time.

This app only runs on Jailbroken devices.

http://www.strategycore.co.uk/forums/post-a2285-dospad-xcomtftd1.jpg.html http://www.strategycore.co.uk/forums/post-a2286-dospad-xcomtftd2.jpg.html

Source:
Developer website
Thread on touchArcade

Kotaku reports that a new X-COM game has been announced. An FPS simply called XCOM, it is being developed for the Xbox360 and PC by 2K Marin and is a re-imagining of the original franchise.
A quote by 2K's president Christoph Hartmann:

QUOTE

"With BioShock 2, the team at 2K Marin proved themselves as masters of first-person, suspenseful storytelling, and with XCOM they will re-imagine and expand the rich lore of this revered franchise," said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. True to the roots of the franchise, players will be placed in charge of overcoming high-stake odds through risky strategic gambits coupled with heart-stopping combat experiences that pit human ingenuity – and frailty – against a foe beyond comprehension. By setting the game in a first-person perspective, players will be able to feel the tension and fear that comes with combating a faceless enemy that is violently probing and plotting its way into our world.

What do you think of the new direction 2K Marin is taking the game in?
X-COM sequel rumours at GameSpot

GameSpot posted a rumour the other day that there may be two X-COM sequels in the pipeline. The first is supposedly being worked on by 2K Boston / 2K Australia (of Bioshock fame), and speculation is we're talking a first person shooter. The second is supposedly a turn-based game From Civilization developers Firaxis.

QUOTE

The official story: "No comment." -- A tight-lipped 2K Games rep.

Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus that 2K Boston is working on a new X-Com game of some sort, with a shooter spin-off being a strong possibility. As far as a second turn-based X-Com game from Firaxis is concerned, it would be the stuff of old-school gamers' dreams. And, as Fallout 3's massive sales proved, a critically acclaimed reboot of a classic franchise can reap massive rewards.

You can read the full story at GameSpot.com

Thanks to Raion, Mr Mus and Lo for the heads up!

MicroProse asked them to base the action on Earth and to expand on the original design to deliver something more in keeping with the other epic strategy games it already had on its roster. “That prompted me to add the strategic level, with the basic idea of an alien infiltration of earth and the need to capture and research the alien technology to defeat them. It was quite a radical design in many respects, but we were trying to create a grand scale that would rival that of Civilization. In fact the research and technology tree somewhat emulates the role of advances in Civilization, but it also helped to develop the storyline.”
