Cryptic Comet has recently released Cults of the Wastelands, the promised free mini-expansion for their game Armageddon Empires. From a thread on the Quarter to Three forum:

QUOTE
Cults of the Wastelands Mini Expansion Pack

A new toggle exists on the options/create game screens that activates or deactivates the new Cults of the Wastelands content

The first five new games started when the Cults of the Wasteland toggle is selected will offer a unique cult that attempts to accomplish a special cult agenda while active on the map.

After the first five games the option to selecte a specific or random cult is presented

The player must eliminate the cult as well as the other AI players to win the game. Eliminating the cult results in a 100 point bonus to the player's score.

If the all the AI players are eliminated and only the Cult remains, then each turn you will receive a base of 14 Action Points plus any modifiers you are currently owed. If you initiate a battle but do not delay the resolution until the end of the turn, the turn will finish and after the battle you will continue on to the next turn with a fresh 14 Action Point base plus modifiers.

You can get the expansion here. (note: you must have the full version of Armageddon Empires)

That was fast. Wasn't the game released only a month ago? Or maybe less, I forget...

Nope, quite a bit before, maybe July 2007, possibly even earlier.

Does it feel like an actual expansion or is it more of patch with extra units?

Doesn't change anything fundamental AFAI can see, but then again I'm only on my first battle and haven't actually scrapped with the cult yet. The CotW add-on basically throws another faction into the battle, with different goals than you or your opponents. They're not there to 4x, basically.

Started an AAR here if you need a sedative to get you to sleep.

Ah, I see you use the Empire of man, too. Somehow I find it much more powerful than the machines. Well, at least the demo is challenging with the machines.

I do, with the Xenos a close second. I'm rubbish with the Free Mutants for some reason.

I'm not sure if it's a balance thing or me just not being able to construct a good deck. But I did notice that if I play with EoM against the machines, I quickly get a good army and the machines barely one or two units. And when I play with the machines I have one or two units and the EoM has 5 to 6 units. Totally weird. Didn't know they had a forum, probably haven't noticed.

For me, the Machines are quicker to get going because they don't need the Human resource to field 95% of their units, plus what little Human resource you collect can be sold immediately for dice, giving you an edge when it comes to buying initiative.

Is it possible to have the threads in the news section to be shown descending by date and time of the last post?
Without creating problems with news on the front page, naturally. I'm posting this here because I spent some time figuring where this unread post is.

Bottom of the page, SV, change the Order drop-down box to Last Post. Should do the job. And of course tick the 'remember these options' box so you don't have to do it every visit.

No problem, mate.

The Cults don't half complicate this game. It's often quite challenging enough just versus the other factions, but when you throw the Cults as an extra factor into the mix (especially when you still have to figure out what they're there to do) it can sometimes get into piss-me-off territory. Still, I like a good fight.

And I love the way the AI doesn't cheat.

Bought this game. Don't know if I'll have time to play it anytime soon but the developer deserved the money on the strength of the demo, which was awesome and had me well hooked.

After-action report:
-----------------------
STARKE! STARKE! STARKE!

Whose bold attempt to drive an armored infantry column into the Xenopod Nest on turn 8 ended in two platoons wiped out to the man? Mine. But wait! Who's that leader clinging to a battered tank, its treads frantically reversing as it smashes its way out of the writhing tentacles to safety? Charismatic, handsome - it must be General Starke!

Who took control of the Imperial Marine paratroopers, leading them back into that same nest in a surprise air attack when their horrible Corrupters were out seeking the upstart humans? Starke!

Who marched his army west across the wasteland, to set up a firebase on the very tip of our supply route when Recon commandoes were being bounty hunted and cowering in fear? Starke!

Who led a hardened collection of battlesuits, mecha, and tanks against the mutants' giant beasts on turn 36, facing their two strongest armies not once but twice, outside and within their stronghold? And succeeded, with the loss of only a Marine regiment (and the aid of a few airstrikes on those damn dinos)? Starke! Starke! STARKE!

For the glory of the Empire of Man!
