Next Generation reports that sources within the industry reveals that E3 will be no more in it's present form:

QUOTE
Senior industry sources have revealed to Next-Gen.Biz that the E3 industry event, in its present form, has been cancelled for next year and the foreseeable future.

UPDATE: GameSpot has a somewhat less dramatic post up saying more or less the same (spotted at Blue's News).

UPDATE2: ESA reveals their plans for the "new E3" through this press release (thanks baby arm!)

Good or bad if it is so?

To compare the automotive industry to the computer gaming industry.
It would be like cancelling the SEMA show Las Vegas or the autoshow in Frankfurt. An utter and complete clusterf***.
Who was that witty individual who made that brainfart?
Even in this digital day and age there is nothing like actual going to an exhibition and see things in the
'flesh' and getting the lowdown on all of the details.
Talking to the people behind it all and maybe sneaking a peek at something totally new and interesting is what it is all about.
I wonder in what form E3 shall be rise from it's ashes.

I should imagine someone will revive it in some form if it's gone. We'll certainly see something in it's place when the time comes.

So I had a chance to go to the last one and I blew it? Great.

Something will have to take its place, though. For most industry folks, it was the only chance to meet others face to face. Email still can't completely replace that. And the GDC is no where big enough or general enough. Maybe that will change now that there's a vacuum.

I think E3 might have lost focus over the years. In the beginning it was a great arena for developers to show their games, and talk to media and buyers face to face. Lately it's become more of a "most booth babes and loudest noise" sort of show, and that's not what it should be. ESA did try to restrict this by enforcing new rules this year, but I don't think it was enough.

In my opinion they need to find back to the roots. I went to both E3 and Vegas this year, and both places bombards you with so many impressions at once it's hard to focus. I did manage to do the interviews I had pre-planned, but a lot of time is spent looking around confused and distracted. Granted this was my first year, but I don't think it's a good way of providing information. E3 is an important event, but it has to change. Few stands and many interview and private display booths would be good I believe.

Last year was the quietest of the four I've been to, so you can imagine what the other ones were like! tongue.gif

I hope its not going to get too selective or StrategyCore won't be able to get into it next year. Then again, I won't have to send so much time writing up the interviews, so I guess every cloud has its silver lining. laugh.gif

According to the Digg headline earlier (didn't read the full article), it's not cancelled, just will be toned down.

IMO, I don't agree with you Slaughter. Can you imagine an "entertainment" expo if it were toned down to the fun level of a shareholder's meeting?

Shareholders wouldn't be welcome wink.gif

The media would get just as good stuff out of a convention like the one I describe. Despite the retards, most people are interested in screens, trailers, interviews, hands-on previews and the likes. This would be just as good if you cut all the crap at E3 like loud noise that makes it almost impossible to conduct interviews, booth babes that has no place there and so on.

The ESA had a response today:

QUOTE
"To better address the needs of today's global computer and video game industry, the 2007 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3Expo) is evolving into a more intimate event focused on targeted, personalized meetings and activities, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) announced today.

"The world of interactive entertainment has changed since E3Expo was created 12 years ago. At that time we were focused on establishing the industry and securing orders for the holiday season," said Douglas Lowenstein, President of the ESA, the trade association representing U.S. computer and video game publishers and the owner of E3Expo. "Over the years, it has become clear that we need a more intimate program, including higher quality, more personal dialogue with the worldwide media, developers, retailers and other key industry audiences."

The new E3Expo will take shape over the next several months. As currently envisioned, it will still take place in Los Angeles, described by ESA as a "great and supportive partner helping to build E3." It will focus on press events and small meetings with media, retail, development, and other key sectors. While there will be opportunities for game demonstrations, E3Expo 2007 will not feature the large trade show environment of previous years.

As the less dramatic news posts yesterday predicted then? Will be interesting to see exactly what E3 ends up being. Depending on if it leaves room for the smaller developers that need the attention the most, I guess it might be a good thing. Thanks for the heads up baby arm!
