Does anybody know of a .cat sound format extractor for "X-COM UFO DEFENSE"?
Now understand, Im referring to the US version of X-COM, that version has .cat sound files and I was wanting to extract some sounds primarily the music from "X-COM UD", because I like those sounds better than the "X-COM EU" Why'd did they have to use midi when they repackaged? ugh.... *shudders -------------------- John Nebthos... need I say more?

The datafiles used in EU and UD are identical. It's only in the collectors edition where they converted the synthesiser sequences into midi files. The sound effects are all lumped together as raw audio in their .cat files. Depending on the version of the game itself, the sampling rate will be different.
Actually, it's the synthesiser wave table used by Windows that makes the midi files sound less pleasant. The one used by the dos game itself is somewhat different. I tested some of the midi files with a dos midi player and they sounded way different than when played from in windows. Same thing happens in Doom. When run with the dos executable, the music sounds good, but when running the windows port of the game, it starts using the synthesiser table used by windows, which generally sounds awful on some sound cards. You know, if you wanted to, you could get something like the Modplug tracker, load up the midi files and assign wave samples to each instrument then tweak them until they sound right. - NKF -------------------- Current Avatar Source: A custom GM-Striker. LOL, the other day I was screwing around with my PSX copy of Terror From The Deep and the sound program I was using kept extracting the music to midi format. So, I took a listen to the files and they were indeed in midi. I didn't realize that the sound was already in that format. Makes perfect sense now.
