Hello fellow XCOM fans,
It is refreshing to find a group that is as passionate about the game as I am. In fact, I have been searching for you all for a very, very long time. As indicated in the topic, I need serious help. I have reordered the XCOM Gold edition, which makes the third set of XCOM software I have purchased thus far. Of course, I am having tremendous difficulties running the game on XP, so much so that I have given and acquired an older computer in attempt to successfully run the game. I have followed every direction listed so far, ie dosbox, file copying etc... but still to no avail.. Please someone help! I am losing my mind! Problems so far: Getting the game to run at a normal speed, getting dosbox to work at all, getting the sound to work, getting around some annoying error messages: some "Geoscape" error and another that says "something or another is being used by another program," after which the game gets a funny pink picture and plays nothing but the music. The last computer I used was built in 1998, has a decent processor, and Windows 98. I have another computer that will be arriving this weekend. It is 1995 issue with Win 1995, I am hoping I will have more luck with that one. I AM MORE THAN WILLING TO COMPENSATE ANYONE WHO WILL ASSIST ME IN THIS ENDEAVOR... Thanks in advance, E |

What version(s) of the game do you have?
Floppy, CD DOS, or CD Windows if you jut orderd CE. thet version does not work with does box. and probably needs f0dders loader to run. also what are the specs of the computers you have... cpu speed and brand. memory and vidoe card -Blade FireLight -------------------- QUOTE Combat is very simple, there is a first place and second place, second place is laying face down in the mud, sometimes, so is first place. |

thats quite a way to go to get x-com running.
I've got Collectors Edition running quite happily under win2k on a quite up to date pc (not cutting edge, but not old); i wonder why you're having such troubles. try f0dder.has.it for the video & sound bugfix or if it's a dos version then VDMSound may be of use, i've found it works wonders for some older games. (mmm.... system shock). anyway, as bladefirelight says, specs are useful for trouble shooting. -------------------- A Target_Tinboy production

Hi guys,
Thanks for coming through. To answer some questions: I am using everything except floppies. I purchased the Gold Edition years ago and have been attempting to install it, literally, ever since. I want to say the specs are approximately 433-500 Mhz IBMs Win 98 (my good comp is XP 1.8G and I have no clue about video and sound cards, how important are the cards in themselves?), unfortunately I do not have them in front of me as I am on an assignment out of state. If anyone feels like speculating on the topic to help me out, that would be awesome. If you guys should figure out the problem for me, I will gladly export some British pounds in your favor. "God save the Queen" at this point, whatever I have to do to get the game running I will update again this weekend when I can divulge more information, thanks again! E |

actualy sound and vidoe modles are important...
for dos the sound is important if your not using dosbox. it must be 100% sounblaster ISA compatible.. even if it's using a TSR driver to get that. for windows the video card and driver version is important. there are diferent fixes for each.. for some the directX accelorator need to be turned off to slow it down while on others that would make it faster. foders loader fixes corrupt video and some level speed on some nVidia cards. I expect that the best solution is dosbox on your faster comp. that elimiatest the hardware problems.. you only have to worry about CPU to get it' to a decent speed. (the more the better) feel free to IM me when you are infront of one of your comptuers and I will see what I can do. -Blade FireLight -------------------- QUOTE Combat is very simple, there is a first place and second place, second place is laying face down in the mud, sometimes, so is first place. |
