Hi all,
believe it or not ive just found this game (aftermath) sitting on my local store shelf a couple of weeks ago and oh how great a rush of memories. The original game was the first PC games I bought way back in 94??? when i was at uni! great game then, great game now. havent seen many differences (that i can remember) except i dont particularly like not deploying from the jet at the beginning of a mission, that bit was fun, why'd they pull it?? Any way ive searched through the forums for any mention on this so forgive me if it has been asked before but i didnt find it and tthe search engine turned up no results, Can anyone tell me why I have started misteriously losing bases? im just playing as normal and then a pop up window tells me we have suffered a serious set back and have lost one of my bases, there was no sign of UFO's around both bases had military bases right next to them and there was deffinitely no warning??? im pretty confused here! I have put the latest (1.2?) patch in before i started playing so should be up to date. any help appreciated just dont tell me i have to start over again coz im gonna lose all my bases Cheers K.. oh forgot to mention im around mid Febuary game time |

I imagine that the biomass is eating up your bases. You have to find a cure for the biomass in order to save the world, or the whole world will be eaten up by the biomass. Losing bases is the first sign that you have a biomass infestation, and in time a person learns to see on the Geoscape what the biomass really looks like, and then suddenly realizes with terror that it has already eaten up half a continent or that patches of it are on multiple continents eating away and spreading.

ah, so can you not see the biomass on the globe until you have somehow done a mission that lets you research it or something?
there is no actual change in the landscape of the areas that i can see so i guess the biomass must be hiddden until something happens? Do i have to wait for a particular mission before i can get biomass samples etc to begin research? thanks for the reply |

You can see the biomass, but many have complained that it doesn't look any different than land, colorwise. The only real difference between the biomass and land on some computer systems is the texture of the biomass. It's a subtle thing, on some computers.
There is a long and difficult process of what you have to capture and research in order to find the solution, and some people never do figure out how to kill the biomass. I can't remember the process anymore, as it's been awhile since I've taken a game all the way into biomass research. I had to keep starting the game over again and again while beta testing the different versions of the mod, so I never got to the biomass most of the time. Try the official ALTAR forum: http://forum.ufo-aftermath.com/ In particular the General Aftermath Section, look for links in which people are complaining about the biomass. http://forum.ufo-aftermath.com/index.php?showforum=4 Here's a link for example entitled "Stupid Biomass: I want my bases back." http://forum.ufo-aftermath.com/index.php?showtopic=269 Once you know what you are doing there are some quick and slick ways to handle the biomass, kind of like pushing the right sequence in the console games. I found that a judicious save and reload over and over again until I got a Planter and got it shot down was what was needed in my case. |

Well a stroke of luck came meandering my way the other day, desperate as I was to shoot down a planter to get my biomass sample I happened to shoot down a solitary fighter which crashed landed in to a biomass region, much to my glee after the mission the troops had, apparently, got enough biomass stuck to the soles of their boots to scrape a sample together and off went the biomass research like level 2 soldier seeing a grey with gattling gun.
I now have got far enough to change a couple of my sites into repulsers and am waiting to see if it drives it back at all. Does it just drive it back out of the segment that base controls or will it keep pushing it back till all has gone back to the bionode??? Oh well guess ill find out sooner or later. Cheers K.. |

All bases have the same radious of repulsion no matter what region they control. Because of this you should expect that some bases will have to be permanent biomass repulsion bases just the keep the darn thing in check.
Here's a tip tho: If you notice that a certain patch of biomass isn't receding like it should, then the most likely reason is that a biomass node is quite near. Biomass repulsors will only push back so far to a node. -------------------- There's always some dirt to dig out
